The exhausted gate guard checked the tense trader’s goods.
“Okay, we have one handcart.” The soldier peeked into each crate. “Fishing worms—gross. A variety of fruit—yum, they look good. An enemy warrior—he looks sturdy. Sticks of butter—I’m surprised they haven’t melted.”
There was a moment of silence.
“My dear sir, you must have been mistaken about the third item. It’s just armor.” The sweating merchant handed the city employee several gold pieces.
The two men stared at each other.
“… Good enough for government work.” Shrugging, the security guard waved the peddler and his cart through.
